In 2012, Gunfighter University became the official brand of John “Shrek” McPhee’s firearm training. John McPhee is a retired Special Operations Sergeant Major and Owner of S.O.B. Tactical. He has trained countless U.S. Special Operations forces and thousands of International Tier 1 Operators around the world. He is one of a handful of operators with over a decade of combat having served in multiple theaters from Bosnia and South America, to recent war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. John has been providing training to individuals for over 15 years. He has logged over 20,000 hours of firearms coaching and has helped shape the training industry with his best practices.
Purpose and Mission
The purpose of Gunfighter University is to provide world class firearms coaching to individuals of any skill level. Providing a safe and informative session, so that each individual leaves with valuable information. Above all else, teaching from facts and experience over industry jargon and trends. We are replacing the very un-exact “Art” of firearms with “Science Facts
The approach of John’s teaching is unique in that his style is to educate and not intimidate. There are many courses that can be attended in which you will be yelled at and chastised for your performance. Gunfighter University students will not be treated as if they are in the military, they will be treated as if they paid to learn a skill.
Build and rebuild a strong foundation of firearms fundamentals. Many people attend a course and expect to fire hundreds of rounds. To build a solid foundation, you do not need to do this. You need only to have good instruction.
Enforce the “WHY” of teaching and John’s methodology. Many instructors do not have a “WHY” to their teaching. To John it’s simple, provide the best instruction so that firearms enthusiast, law enforcement and military personnel are as safe and efficient as possible.
A modern sports coaching model is implemented in every course. A proper way to coach and provide feedback to a student can be seen through every sport. Think of the coaching greats and you see consistent traits in all of them. Coaching at Gunfighter University aims to emulate best in class coaching.
Using technology smartly, not just for the sake of using technology. Video diagnostics is offered at each course taught. This provides students valuable take away information that they can continue to learn from.
Services
In Person:
In person classes are offered throughout the US and provide instruction to civilians, law enforcement and military personnel. John travels to over 13 different states per year to provide training. Often these classes are requested by a group of individuals who would like to learn from John.
Online Classes:
Online classes are available to everyone. If you can’t make it to a class or would simply like your shooting technique evaluated, you can send us a video of your shooting. There are specific requirements for recording yourself for each online training package.

Private Training:
Gunfighter University offers in person and online firearms training for every level of shooter. Our team works to build your foundation then help achieve your goals. Private courses are available for anyone looking to have one on one instruction.
